Dollar to Naira Black Market Rate Today — Tuesday, 4 August 2026
The naira slipped further against the dollar on Tuesday, 4 August 2026, with the greenback trading at ₦1,411.58 (buy) and ₦1,421.82 (sell) on the black market, representing a 0.37% day-on-day weakening of the local currency against the United States dollar.
For importers and small business owners sourcing foreign exchange outside the banking system, Tuesday's movement modest as it appears in percentage terms adds to a cumulative pressure that is quietly eroding margins across virtually every product category. A business placing a dollar order at the parallel sell rate of ₦1,421.82 is paying roughly ₦56.82 more per dollar than the CBN official rate of ₦1,365, a spread of approximately 4.2%. On a shipment requiring $50,000, that gap alone translates to an additional landed cost of over ₦2.8 million before freight, duties, or port charges are even factored in.
The situation is similarly strained for businesses importing from the United Kingdom or the European Union. Sterling was changing hands at ₦1,892.19 to buy and ₦1,912.52 to sell on the parallel market rates that importers of machinery, spare parts, and manufactured consumer goods from Britain must absorb when planning their cost of goods. Those sourcing from Europe face the euro at ₦1,594.58 to buy and ₦1,611.67 to sell, as reflected in the latest euro to naira figures. Dealers and retailers working on thin margins in electronics, fashion, or food ingredients will find these rates particularly punishing when reconciled against shelf pricing set weeks or months earlier.
The persistence of the parallel rate premium over the official window signals that many importers particularly smaller operators who lack access to CBN-allocated forex or verified letters of credit continue to rely on the open market to fund their sourcing cycles. This structural dependence makes their cost base inherently volatile and difficult to hedge, since the parallel market can shift between the time a proforma invoice is issued and the time payment is actually executed.
